We recently had the pleasure of working with Richard, the owner of a 4-bedroom Victorian semi-detached house in Stockport, on an exciting project to retrofit an air source heat pump (ASHP) into his home.

Richard’s journey towards exploring alternative heating solutions began with a strong desire to reduce his carbon footprint and embrace sustainable living practices. With solar panels and an electric car already part of his lifestyle, Richard was keen to further enhance the environmental friendliness of his home.

“It was environmental reasons, wanting to try and do the right thing in terms of carbon footprints,” explained Richard. “I’ve been looking at heat pumps for a while, influenced by a friend who’s had a ground source heat pump for a long time. I was very interested in that.”

Initially, Richard had concerns about rising electricity prices, myths and negativity surrounding heat pumps, and uncertainties about the cost-effectiveness of the switch from a gas boiler to an Air Source Heat Pump. However, an innovative renewable energy cost calculator provided by Warmur offered valuable insights into potential energy savings and efficiency improvements, instilling confidence in the decision to proceed with the retrofit.

The turning point was when Warmur suggested that it could dramatically reduce fuel bills, Richard recalled. “That gave me the confidence to go ahead with it.”

Encouraged by the promising projections from the energy modelling, Richard proceeded to gather quotes from various companies, including IMS Heat Pumps. Despite receiving quotes from various companies, it was our dedication to delivering a well-designed and efficient system that ultimately convinced Richard to choose us. He appreciated our commitment to professionalism and expertise, particularly evident in our interactions with Dave, one of IMS Heat Pumps Technical Consultants.

“Having spoken to other installers, I felt that Dave from IMS was very focused on delivering an efficient, well-designed system. There was obviously a lot of experience in your company. Given it is quite a big outlay, I just wanted to make sure that it was going to be a good system that was going to work well,”

We installed a 7KW Arotherm+; 250L Hot Water Cylinder; 40L Buffer Cylinder and upgraded the radiators throughout the property. The installation process was smooth and hassle-free, thanks to the exceptional service provided by our installation team.

“Christian and Ben were brilliant, great, really good-humoured. A pleasure to have around. And Luke and Ben did a great job when they handed it over at the end of the week, they took me through it all, explained the heat curve and that kind of thing”.

Once the ASHP was up and running, Richard and his family immediately noticed a positive difference in their home’s comfort and energy efficiency.

“The COP figures have been incredible, better than I’d hoped for – overall 5.2 for this month, including hot water, and even today with the temperature around freezing outside it’s still hitting 3.2. What we hadn’t really appreciated is how much more comfortable it would make the house feel – we are really pleased with the installation. Thanks again to you and the team!”

Asked if he would recommend IMS, Richard said: “Yes, absolutely. I think I think your years of experience and dedication really shines through. Taking the time to design it properly and put in a good system, and things like using purified water to reduce the flow resistance – all those little things just make you feel like it’s a really well-designed system”.
