21 October marks the first-ever Global Heat Pump Day, organised by EHPA, the European Heat Pump Association. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the potential of heat pumps. It involves partners worldwide ready to collaborate to spread knowledge and highlight the benefits this technology already brings to our daily lives.
The 24 million heat pumps currently installed in Europe help avoid the consumption of 5.5 billion cubic metres of gas and 45 mega tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in Europe annually. In Europe, heat pumps are reducing gas and carbon dioxide emissions more than ever.
These are the new figures from the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA), presented at the latest Heat Pump Forum 2024 in Brussels on 25 and 26 September 2024. Despite these advantages, only 765,000 heat pumps were sold in 13 European countries1 in the first half of 2024, 47 percent less than in the same period last year, when 1.44 million heat pumps were installed in the same countries.
Although heat pumps are suitable for all climates, environmentally friendly, regardless of geopolitical issues and crucial to achieving the 2030 and 2050 climate and energy targets, some barriers are limiting their adoption. Some of these are misinformation and lack of consumer awareness, preventing widespread diffusion. Urgent action is needed to reverse the slowdown over the past six months.
As EHPA's new Director General, Paul Kenny, stated at the Heat Pump Forum, “The new European Commission should publish the long-awaited EU Heat Pump Action Plan targeting European heat pumps, to ensure it supports production and training. Additionally, the plan should include provisions for flexible electricity tariffs, allowing households and businesses with heat pumps to take advantage of cheaper energy options".
To address these urgent issues in Italy, RX Italy is organising the new Heat Pump Technologies exhibition and conference at Allianz MiCo Milan on 2-3 April 2025. This will be the first event focused on heat pumps and related technologies, including photovoltaics, storage, inverters, and high-efficiency components. These technologies will take centre stage alongside heat pumps, offering a comprehensive view of the holistic approach needed for the energy transition.
Heat Pump Technologies will host the EHPA as a conference co-organiser, providing a platform for the leading trade associations to give their opinions on the expected outlook for the heat pump market. Leading companies in the industry will also participate in the exhibition and conference, presenting their best-performing technologies. During this international event, the Energy & Strategy Group think tank will show the results of their new research on heat pumps, aiming to investigate the dynamics of the Italian market.
“Significantly, the EHPA establishes the first Heat Pump Day in 2024,' says Massimiliano Pierini, Managing Director of RX Italy.” It is crucial for all market players and governments to send strong signals supporting heat pump technology and all related clean technologies that can help us achieve our climate targets. While the industry is already well on track, in the residential sector, there is a need to create awareness among end users of the benefits and advantages of heat pumps. RX Italy also wanted to contribute by creating an opportunity for the supply chain to meet and exchange ideas."
On October 21st, in celebration of the first Heat Pump Day, Heat Pump Technologies will bring together key industry Associations at the RX Italy headquarters in Milan for an open discussion. The aim is to outline the topics that will be addressed during the two-day event in Milan on April 2-3, 2025.
