The Institute of Refrigeration (IOR) has published its line-up of events for the first half of 2022.
January 6 - Membership Matters
1.00pm – Applying to Become a Chartered Engineer via the IOR
Are you interested in becoming a Chartered Engineer but not sure what is involved, how long it will take or cost and whether you would be eligible? IOR Members can apply for registration with the Engineering Council at Chartered, Incorporated or Technician level - and new individual routes are also available for those without the approved qualifications who can use technical or practice reports as evidence. Find out more about the grades, application processes and experiences of those recently registered.
All Members who have gained Engineering Council recognition through the IOR (or other professional engineering institutes) are invited to talk about their experiences and offer some useful tips and hints about the different routes and the interviews at this webchat.
There will be a mix of people on the call - current registrants, those part way through their application process and others who just want to find out more. It will cover Chartered, Incorporated and Engineering Technician grades of registration.
The aim of this webchat is to help Members make contact with others who could help them in preparing and completing their application - either as a sponsor or with more informal advice after the meeting. Members will be offered the opportunity to meet regularly - every three months or so - to update on how their application is progressing and encourage each other. In this way, we can share our successes over time and encourage others to start their Engineering Council registration process.
If you cannot make this date please sign up anyway as you will receive a recording of this session and be invited to future events.
January 19 - IOR STEM Network
3.15pm – How to Promote Science in Schools
Members hosting the webchat will share their experience of promoting refrigeration and air conditioning science at school events and careers fairs. They will also talk about how they have used resources like STEM learning regional groups, STEM science clubs and IOR Fantastic Fridges website. Ask them what it's like becoming a STEM Ambassador and pick up hints and tips for getting involved in careers initiatives.
January 20 - Membership Matters
9.15am - Submitting your application to become a Fellow of the IOR
Current Members can join this webinar to gain a better understanding of the Fellow appointment process whether they are putting together their application for this year or considering applying in future.
January 27 – CoolTalk
10.00am – Working Safely with Flammable Refrigerants
A free webinar for service engineers and technicians where there will be practical advice from manufacturers and suppliers. This meeting will give you a chance to ask questions on topical issues and introduce the IOR.
The programme will include
- Using flammable refrigerant safely in public areas, Jane Gartshore FInstR, Cool Concerns
- The use of flammables in small commercial applications, Ian Playford MInstR, Foster and Gamko
January 31-February 1 - AHR Expo 2022

February 4 - IOR TechTalk and Webchat
4.00pm - Development of a Screw Compressor with Oil Injection System
Presented by Ted Perry Award for student research winner Nausheen Basha. The paper will be available for download at the end of January.
February 17 - 2022 Expert Rewind - Member Exclusive
4.00pm – How Can We Reduce the Demand for Energy? Recording from the Annual Conference
This webinar, which was a keynote during the IOR Annual Conference, explores energy hierarchy. Developed back in 2009 and republished by IMechE in 2020, it provides a refreshing approach to tackling the challenge of net zero by putting energy demand reduction at the top of the list of things to consider when developing a sustainable energy policy for the future. It highlights the need to challenge why we use energy in the first place and how we can reduce or even eliminate demand. The benefits of doing this are far greater than the incremental improvements that can be made in efficiency and a kWh saved is more valuable than a kWh supplied when trying to meet the ‘net zero’ goal; the impact is also immediate and not something confined to future development. This is true for the HVACR industry where demand is often in response to existing working practices and is applied without any challenge to improving the process or in some cases eliminating it altogether.
March 3 - IOR TechTalk and Webchat
4.00pm – Integrated Heating and Cooling in Industrial Ppplications
Through the application of recovered heat from the industrial refrigeration processes via heat pumps, this case study presentation will explain how the world's first truly carbon-neutral food and beverage facility will be opening in spring 2022.
March 8 - WiRACHP Network Event
9.30am - Career Development Day to celebrate International Women’s Day
The IOR Women in RACHP Network will hold a training day to celebrate the 2022 International Women's Day. The day is open to anyone working in, or who has an interest in, the refrigeration air conditioning and heat pump sector.
April 7 - IOR TechTalk and Webchat
4.00pm – Carbon Dioxide Hazard Assessment and Safety System Requirements
April 11-13 - 7th IIR International Conference on Sustainability and the Cold Chain - online conference.
The conference will be a platform to share expertise on the cold chain. Papers will explore cold chain innovation, developments in refrigeration technology and design.
April 28 - Expert Rewind, Member Exclusive
4.00pm – Strengthening the RACHP Sector and Supporting UN Sustainable Development Goals through Refrigerant Transition. Recording from the Annual Conference
Hear from Jim Curlin of UNEP as he discussed the RACHP Sector and the global agenda for Net Zero and the challenges that we, as a sector, face. This paper was originally presented as a keynote address at the IOR Annual Conference in April 2021.
June 26 - World Refrigeration Day
